How to Compost for Beginners

How to compost
for beginners

Free, rich soil from what you'd throw away β€” the simple recipe, and how to keep it from ever smelling.

A backyard compost bin with kitchen scraps and rich dark finished compost

The simple recipe

Greens

Nitrogen

Kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, fresh grass. The wet, fast-rotting half that feeds the pile.

Browns

Carbon

Dry leaves, cardboard, straw. The dry half that keeps it airy and stops the smell.

Balance

Roughly 2–3 browns : 1 green

More browns than greens is the whole trick. Too wet and green = slimy and smelly; add browns.

Air & time

Turn it, wait

Turn every week or two for air. Finished, crumbly compost in a few months β€” faster if you turn more.

Skip these: meat, dairy, oily food and pet waste β€” they smell and draw pests. Stick to scraps, leaves and coffee and you'll never have a problem.
