How to Grow Pumpkins

How to grow
pumpkins

Big, satisfying fruit that stores for months β€” pumpkins are easy if you give them the room and food they demand.

Room, food, and a good cure

Give them room

They sprawl

Pumpkin vines run for metres. Plant on the edge of a bed or over compost and let them ramble.

Feed heavily

Hungry plants

Rich, compost-heavy soil and steady feeding. Big fruit needs big fuel β€” plant them right on the compost pile.

Water the roots

Deep, not on leaves

Water deeply at the base; wet leaves invite mildew. Ease off as the fruit ripens and the skin hardens.

Cure to keep

Harden the skin

Cut with a stub of stem, cure 1–2 weeks in the sun, then store cool and dry. Cured pumpkins keep for months.

The storage secret: leave a good stem on, cure until the skin is hard, and never store a bruised one. Done right, a pumpkin feeds you deep into winter.
